2014 Trotter Lecture

Event Type
Monday, April 7, 2014
7:00 pm – 9:30 pm
This annual lecture, presented as part of the Trotter Prize and Endowed Lecture Series by the College of Science in collaboration with the Dwight Look College of Engineering, seeks to illuminate connections between science and religion, often viewed in academia as non-overlapping if not rival world views. This year's event will feature two speakers — James A. Shapiro, Professor of Microbiology at the University of Chicago and an expert in bacterial genetics, and James M. Tour, T.T. and W.F. Chao Professor of Chemistry at Rice University and inventor of the world’s first nanocar. Shapiro's talk, "The Read-Write Genome: Taking Some of the Mystery Out of Evolution," will explore a cell-active view of genetic change in which genomes are intricately formatted data storage systems subject to constant modification and improvement — changes that are introduced and executed by the cells themselves. Tour's talk, "The Impact of Faith Upon the Life of a Scientist," will describe his nanoscale science and technology research, then detail the story of his coming to faith in Jesus Christ and the impact of the scriptures upon both his life and his career as a scientist. For more information on this free lecture event, contact the Texas A&M College of Science at (979) 845-8817.
